If you are anything like me at this time of the year, you are just about ready for a vacay! The question is, can you go and be stress-free while you are there? Stress-free means you are truly enjoying your vacation and not worried about business back at home. Well......I have a confession. If vacation is not worrying about business back at home, then I have honestly never had a vacation. I take my laptop everywhere and anyone I have every vacationed with hates it! Now as I told you guys earlier, I'm leaving for vacation this week and happy to say I won't be taking my laptop or working while I'm there, and I am totally ok with that.
Here is how after six years of being in business, I finally organized my business so I could feel comfortable taking a vacation.
Prep The Team: Make sure that before you leave, all team members understand what their roles are and thoroughly understand how to respond to inquiries on your behalf. Also, make the decision of whether you want your team checking in on you with updates while you are on vacation. I honestly do not recommend this. When you love what you do, it's so easy to start working and be totally unaware that you are working. Tell your team you don't want to be bothered, be sure to make someone else the point of contact for an emergency.
Be Strategic: The worst thing you can do is leave with no strategy of what needs to be tended to when you get back, a vacation does not give you permission to fully lose your mind. Make a checklist of what needs to be done the first day you return back to work- a detailed checklist. This will be a huge help in guiding you in avoiding the "where the hell do I start" syndrome many entrepreneurs suffer when they get back from a long vacation.
Schedule: Take advantage of being able to schedule tweets and social media for your business while you are gone. Also, be mindful of what you put on your calendar in the days leading up to your vacation and the first few days you will be back. Give yourself time to regroup, you don't want to get back from vacation and instantly have your stress level up because you are right back into a hectic day.
Enjoy: Be unapologetic about your vacation! You work hard and you deserve it. One of the biggest mistakes I see a lot of entrepreneurs make (I used to be guilty of this) is not making time to celebrate their achievements. We spend so much time thinking about how far we have to go that we forget how far we have come. It's ok to stop for a second, relax and pat yourself on the back. Again, you deserve it.
I hope these tips have been super helpful for you if you are currently preparing for a vacation! I want to hear from you, what scares you the most about leaving your business for a week or two to vacation? Send me your replies to email@example.com.
THIS WEEK'S FIRE YOUR BOSS TIP: Don't Be Afraid Of No
Never let a "no" stop you, everyone won't see your greatness right away and that should not offend you. It may take dozens of no's until you get to the life-changing YES. Be tenacious and be fearless, don't let no discourage you.
